My nursing placement at Leeds Mencap
Leeds Mencap is an amazing charity organisation, and I really valued the opportunity to complete part of my nursing placement there.
For the first three weeks, I was part of the Playscheme, working with children and young people with SEND aged 4–18. This gave me the opportunity to build positive relationships, learn about different communication styles and understand each individual beyond their healthcare needs. I really enjoyed getting involved in activities and seeing the children and young people grow in confidence, have fun and feel included. It also strengthened my understanding of person-centred care and reminded me of the importance of treating everyone with dignity, respect and as an individual.
During my final week, I spent time with the Family Services team, which helped me understand the wider support Leeds Mencap provides to families. Throughout my placement, all of the staff were incredibly kind, welcoming and knowledgeable, and I felt supported throughout my time with them. It was clear that the health, wellbeing, safety and best interests of the children and young people were always at the forefront of everything they did. My experience has developed my understanding of SEND, strengthened my communication skills and taught me the importance of patience, inclusion and building meaningful relationships. I am incredibly grateful to everyone at Leeds Mencap for making my placement such a positive, enjoyable and valuable experience, and I will take what I have learnt forward throughout my nursing career.
