Our Friday Club
At Leeds Mencap we run a weekly social club for people aged 18 to 30 with learning disabilities.
Friday club focuses on beginning to develop skills that will help young adults to prepare for life as an adult and achieve their goals and aspirations - this could be preparation for volunteering or work, making friends or building confidence.
Many young adults feel very isolated and don’t have the same opportunity to socialise and go out as young adults without learning disabilities and so the emphasis in the club is to go out and about and be sociable whilst being supported. Through the activities the members are supported to understand money, how to make judgements about keeping themselves safe and well, for example, around drinking alcohol, how to stay safe when out and about and online and how to have healthy relationships.
The club members decide what they want to do themselves and the range of interests and activities is very wide.
Past activities have included meals out, bowling, themed nights, cooking sessions, film nights, trips to see Leeds Rhinos and other sporting events and discos.
