Hawthorn Playroom is for children aged from 2 to 4 years, who have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) and live in Leeds.

We have a maximum of 8 children in this room at any one time with 4 members of staff (1:2 ratio).

“Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are very well supported. Staff know and understand their needs in detail. This helps them to ensure that they plan learning and experiences that engage children while also developing their skills. For example, children with SEND learn to follow routines and instructions using picture cards and Makaton. Children with SEND are making excellent progress alongside their peers” (Ofsted, March 2024).

15 hours + per week childcare for children aged 2 – 4 years:

The majority of the children attend for 15 hours per week, but any number of hours can be accommodated up to full time (50hrs per week). The children will be supported to progress towards learning and development goals based on their needs and abilities. They may also spend time in other playrooms in the nursery. Children who have learning disabilities/additional needs and who have a ‘base’ place in one of the mainstream playrooms may also spend time in the specialist playroom for targeted activities.
