At Leeds Mencap, we’re proud to collaborate with organisations that share our values and our mission to support individuals with learning disabilities and their families. One of our most dedicated corporate partners is Irwin Mitchell, a leading UK-based law firm with a strong reputation for legal excellence and community engagement.

We recently had the pleasure to speak to Stuart Bell, a solicitor from Irwin Mitchell’s Medical Negligence team, about the firm's ongoing journey with Leeds Mencap and why this partnership means so much to them. Irwin Mitchell was founded in 1912 and offers a wide range of legal and financial services for both individuals and businesses. With expertise in areas such as personal injury, medical negligence, corporate law, real estate, and employment law, the firm has built an impressive national reputation. Their clients are spread across the UK, but they maintain a strong local presence in key communities including Leeds.

When asked why Irwin Mitchell chose to partner with Leeds Mencap, Stuart explained, “It’s a really important relationship for us. Leeds Mencap is a great local charity who are dedicated to helping the people of Leeds. As someone who lives locally, having that visibility and physical presence in the community really matters.”

Irwin Mitchell’s involvement extends far beyond financial contributions; the organisation has helped Leeds Mencap wherever they can- by donating various items for our Easter raffle and our Christmas Raffles and also attending events such as our most recent Christmas quiz! “The work Leeds Mencap does is fantastic,” Stuart said. “It’s a worthy charity, and we want to help increase its reach making sure people know where Leeds Mencap is and how it can help them.” Stuart emphasised that many of the firm’s clients have needs that overlap with the services Leeds Mencap offers. By working together, we can ensure that individuals and families are referred to the right place at the right time.

One of the most impactful aspects of our partnership is Irwin Mitchell’s quarterly legal clinics, held right here at The Vinery Centre since 2022. These free sessions are open to the public and provide legal advice for parents with children who have severe learning disabilities and autism. These quarterly clinics have been a success for both Irwin Mitchell and Leeds Mencap as it allows an opportunity to provide support to the local community. These clinics are both online and in person to support any person who may not have the capability to travel. These clinics offer guidance on a range of legal issues, and they’re especially beneficial for families navigating complex situations.

We would like to expand our thanks to Stuart Bell and the entire Irwin Mitchell team for your continued support and for helping us grow our reach and impact.
