What Leeds Mencap means to me as a student on placement

Being on placement at Leeds Mencap has meant more to me than I can fully express. Not only has it been an incredible opportunity to understand how a charity operates behind the scenes, but it has also allowed me to work closely with the children, young people, and families who access the provision. Getting to know everyone has genuinely been the highlight of my placement. I’ve been able to build real relationships, see individuals grow, and witness firsthand the difference Leeds Mencap makes in their lives.

I’ve also had unwavering support and encouragement from the staff behind the scenes. I have never once felt out of place and only ever been included and encouraged. Every team member has contributed to my learning in their own way, and their willingness to guide me has been a truly special part of this experience.

Although I’m sad to be leaving such a positive and healthy learning environment, I know I’m finishing this placement with a much richer knowledge base, a deeper understanding of the sector, and a real appreciation for the work Leeds Mencap does every day. The staff are truly everything they appear to be - genuine, compassionate, and wholeheartedly committed to the people and the community they support. What you see on the surface is exactly who they are behind the scenes.
