About us

Our vision is that children and young people with learning disabilities, autism and other complex needs, and their families and carers, reach their full potential in the communities we serve, where every individual is valued, supported and equipped to thrive.

Leeds Mencap was started over 70 years ago by and for those with learning disabilities.

From our purpose-built home, The Vinery Centre, we offer compassionate, tailored support to children, young people, and families and carers in Leeds who have learning disabilities, autism and other complex needs.

We provide social, educational and practical opportunities through our Nursery, Centre and Family Services and support people to develop their strengths, build lasting connections and achieve their full potential.

We take pride in our values and the way we work.

Inclusivity- We create spaces where everyone is welcomed, respected and given the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their abilities, background or experiences.

Belonging- We work to ensure that all individuals we support have a place where they are understood, heard and valued, and experience a strong sense of community.

Empowerment- We are committed to giving individuals the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make decisions about their lives and advocate for their needs.

Although we’re affiliated with national Mencap (Royal Mencap Society), we’re an independent and local charity. This means we need to secure all our own funding to continue to offer our valuable services. Support from individuals, businesses and events is extremely important to us and the work we do.
