On the 11th of May 2025, one of our volunteers, Millie, took on the Rob Burrow Leeds Half Marathon to raise money for Leeds Mencap. Here's what she had to say about her race.

I first started running in January with the aim of being able to complete a 10km run. I never imagined that just five months later, I’d be crossing the finish line of a half marathon. When I decided to sign up, I knew it would be challenging, but I’d been training consistently and felt ready to push myself.

I wanted to fundraise for a charity close to me, to keep me motivated and to give something back to the community. That’s why I chose Leeds Mencap. I’ve been volunteering here for over a year, and in that time, I’ve grown to appreciate the amazing work we do, the people we support, and the sense of community that surrounds it. Fundraising gave me the opportunity to contribute in a new way and support the charity beyond my regular volunteering.

On the day of the half marathon, I woke up early to watch and support some friends running the full marathon for various charities such as Zarach and Leeds Mind. Watching them succeed only made me more excited to start! The course was tough with unexpected hills and the temperature reaching 23 degrees! But with the encouragement of my friends and the atmosphere of the crowd, I pushed through and crossed the finish line in 2 hours and 21 minutes. It’s an achievement I’m really proud of, and I would 100% do it again!

I set out with a fundraising goal of £150, and I’m thrilled to say I raised £210, surpassing my target. Every penny will go towards supporting the vital services Leeds Mencap provides to children and young people with learning disabilities and autism.

We’re incredibly proud of Millie and grateful for her dedication, both as a volunteer and a fundraiser. Thank you, Millie!
