The best start for 0 – 3 year olds
At Leeds Mencap we firmly believe that the earlier your child can be supported to learn and develop the better. The first 3 years of any child’s life is vitally important as their brains develop quickly at that stage. Children with additional needs are no different and so at our specialist playroom, called Hawthorn, children are supported to learn at their own pace but in a way that means they develop skills that will give them a strong foundation for their next steps in school and beyond.
Some children have very complex needs but they can also be supported to experience, interact with and enjoy the world and the people around them.
Hawthorn playroom is bright and well equipped with its own sensory room, ball pool and dining room. There is also an outdoor space and a small climbing structure to help your child develop their physical abilities. We have a cook onsite who prepares food according to your child’s specific dietary needs and we spend a lot of time enjoying the sensory experience of food. We support children who have medical needs around swallowing or feeding to enjoy the social aspects of meal times.
Children will have fun from the moment they arrive to the time they leave. They’ll enjoy water, sand, paint, sensory toys and experiences, stories, songs and games and pretend play – all children are welcome and are supported to play and learn.
The playroom runs on Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week during school term times from 9.30am – 2.15pm.
There are nine places each day and children attend for one day a week.
Food and drink is provided
There is a weekly charge for the service, payable half termly. Payments can be made by BACs, Faster Payments or standing order; by debit/credit card over the phone/in person or by cheque.
A separate parents’ room affords parents and carers the chance to relax and socialise, and to enjoy food and a drink (lunch time meals are available for family members too). A family support worker is on hand to help families with information, advice and support. To find out more about the support available see the Families section.
“I was lost when my daughter was born, absolutely lost. Friends and family didn’t know what to say or do and professionals were poorly equipped to deal with a child with special needs. Luckily, I found Hawthorn and the team helped me and my family build ourselves back up. I now know I am strong enough to cope with anything and that I will do my upmost to make sure my daughter’s life is full of laughter, love and hope. I couldn’t have done it without Leeds Mencap.”
