Jimbo’s Community Nursery provides both mainstream and specialist early years education and childcare in East End Park in Leeds.

We want to be able to offer places to the many children who want to start coming to the nursery. This is why we’re now recruiting Level 2 and Level 3 Nursery Practitioners for a number of posts, both part-time and full-time basis (including term-time only.)

Some of the children we work with require an especially caring and understanding approach or specialist support to help them flourish, and the work is not always easy, but as part of a strong and experienced team you will be well-supported and have access to specialist training that’s relevant to your role.

The nursery is part of the local charity, Leeds Mencap, and we’re based in a friendly, modern, purpose-built centre. We have excellent facilities and resources, and the nursery is expertly managed by our highly experienced, skilled and supportive Childcare Manager

“I was never really interested in working for somewhere that was just a regular day nursery. I came to Jimbo’s because it’s so specialist and feels like it’s part of something more, that supports Learning Disability and local communities, and feels like a family.” Jimbo’s Nursery Practitioner.

Leeds Mencap is committed to safeguarding all children, young people and adults at risk of harm.  We expect all staff and volunteers to fully share and demonstrate this commitment. All posts are subject to an enhanced DBS check.

We aim for our team to reflect the diversity of people in Leeds and welcome applications from any community.  If you share our passion about all children getting the very best start in life, whatever their background and ability, we would love to hear from you.

Description

Leeds Mencap are looking for people who are passionate about improving the lives of children and young people with learning disabilities to join our Board of Trustees.  Like many charities we have been hit hard by the pandemic but have also found that new ways of working and greater collaboration give us the opportunity to support more people with learning disabilities in the future.

We are looking for people to join a team of 6 skilled and passionate Trustees at a time of uncertainty and change.  You will relish the prospect of getting to know the organisation and your colleagues quickly, grasping the challenges and opportunities we face and working together with Trustees and senior staff to provide strong and clear leadership to the organisation.  The immediate priority is to recover from the effects of the pandemic but we also have our sights on becoming a more inclusive and diverse organisation, extending support to more children and young people with learning disabilities and their families.

We are looking for people with a wide range of skills and experience and from diverse backgrounds. In particular we are looking for people with:

  • Knowledge and experience of Fundraising within a charity setting. Experience  of communications and marketing would also be welcome

  • Knowledge or experience of delivering early years and/or SEND (special educational needs and disability) support
  • previous experience of working or volunteering for a charity or not for profit organisation

Most importantly we are keen to hear from anyone who feels they have something to contribute at this particular stage of our journey, so please get in touch.

We expect a lot but the rewards are equally great.  You’ll see the difference you make in the children and young people who will develop and achieve beyond anyone’s expectations, in the parents who can draw breath and find some respite and comfort in knowing they’re not alone and being given practical and supportive help. In undertaking the role you will be working with a loyal and committed team who are aspirational about what we can achieve together.

About us

Leeds Mencap is a local charity that offers support to children and young people with a learning disability, their families and carers. We’re based in a friendly, modern, purpose-built centre with excellent facilities and resources. Alongside our specialist nursery provision (which is expertly managed by our Childcare Manager) Family Services is the main focus of our work.

Our Family Services work divides into two key areas: Activities and Family Support.

Our Activities include:

  • Fortnightly youth clubs providing activities for children aged 9-13 and 14-18.
  • A weekly Friday Club supporting self-directed activities for young adults aged 18-30.
  • A weekly club for siblings of a child with a learning disability.
  • Holiday Playschemes for children aged 4-18.

Our Family Support work takes the form of:

  • Chats & Tots – a weekly stay and play session that offers both specialist advice from our team and peer-to-peer support.
  • Information, advice and guidance on navigating the often complicated world of support and services available for children with a learning disability.
  • Attendance of meetings with parents to help get the best outcomes for children.
  • SEND specific sleep training courses.
  • SEND toy library.

The staff of the Family Services team are both knowledgeable and experienced. We’re seeking a Family Services Manager who can not only offer the team practical support, advice and guidance, but also support the growth and development of the team and the services we offer.

We are looking for someone who has significant experience in working with children and young people with learning disabilities and their families. The successful candidate will also need to understand Leeds’ education and social care environment, as well as having substantial experience and knowledge in managing safeguarding. This is a position with a great balance of responsibility and reward. The role requires someone who can take responsibility for devising and managing a budget and reporting on progress for their service, as well as being a designated safeguarding lead. But you will be rewarded by leading a team who are making a real difference to the lives of children and young people with a learning disability, and the people that support them.
