Friday Club

The Friday Club is a social club for adults aged 18-25 with learning disabilities.

The focus of the club is to begin to develop skills that will help young adults to prepare for life as an adult and achieve their goals and aspirations.  For some these skills will help prepare them for volunteering or work.  For others they will help build confidence.  Many young adults feel very isolated and don’t have the same opportunity to socialise and go out as young adults without learning disabilities and so the emphasis in the club is to go out and about and be sociable whilst being supported.

The club members decide what they want to do themselves and the range of interests and activities is very wide.   Activities can include such things as meals out, bowling, themed nights, cooking sessions, film-watching, trips to see Leeds Rhinos and other sporting events, discos and much more! Through the activities the members are supported to understand money, how to make judgements about keeping themselves safe and well , for example, around drinking alcohol, how to stay safe when out and about and online and how to have healthy relationships.

(Please be advised that Leeds Mencap also runs groups for 7-14 year olds who are the siblings of persons with a learning disability. To find out more, click here

The Essentials

The group meets on a Friday evening from 7:00pm – 9:00pm during school term time.  As the group go out and about at least half of the time a programme of activities is given out each half term once the group has decided what they want to do.  When the group aren’t out for the evening the session is held at The Vinery Centre.

There is a weekly charge for the service, payable half termly. Payments can be made by BACs, Faster Payments or standing order; by debit/credit card over the phone/in person or by cheque.

Free taster session before you join!

Some club members attend the club with their PA who helps them to get the most out of the evening.  Parents/carers and any PA/support worker who is supporting the young person to travel is welcome to wait.   We have a welcoming room with comfy sofas where you can stay, have a hot drink and chat to any other parents, carers or support workers  who are staying.

“We went bowling while the Friday Club was happening. It was so lovely, something we haven’t done in such a long time and nice to spend some time with my partner.”
