Parent and carer support groups

Parent and carer support groups

Based across Leeds for ease of access the Parent and Carer groups operate on a drop in basis and offer a chance for families in similar situations to come together in their local community, socialise, share experiences and build long term friendships in a safe environment. Families also have access to advice, guidance and information on issues such as: benefits, debt management, transitions services, housing and educational health care plans with opportunities to access further one to one support from a professional family support worker.

Although we do encourage regular attendance in order to gain full benefit of the support provided in the groups, we do understand the demands of daily life and challenges parent/carers face and are therefore relaxed about how often families can attend.

Our groups cover two age ranges:

Early years

These groups run on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday at The Vinery Centre for the parents of the children who attend our Specialist Playroom (Hawthorn).

At the group you’ll get a chance to relax and have a break but you’ll also get a chance to see your child in the playroom and talk to the staff about their development.  The playroom staff work very closely with parents and carers to support you to learn about their needs and development.

6 – 25

We currently run one group, called PACES, in partnership with Carers Leeds.

This group meets once a month on the second Tuesday of each month.  This group often has visiting speakers, workshops or go out for a meal together. Please contact us for the next meeting dates and times by completing the form below, or call us on 0113 2351331.

“I am able to talk openly and honestly to other parents and staff – it is OK to say ‘I’m finding this really hard’ or this is difficult without feeling guilty

“We have guest speakers, who give information about a range of different subjects, for example respite, transport, puberty and behavioural issues.”

“The group is not a moaning group. We believe we need to be as positive as we can be about our children, but as carers we also need some tender loving care!”

Informal groups

When parent and carers drop their children off at the Vinery Centre for Clubs, they are welcome to stay and wait in the centre. We have a welcoming room with comfy sofas where you can stay, have a hot drink and chat to any other parents who are staying.  These are informal groups and not facilitated or coordinated but allow parents to make their own friendships and networks.

We are always happy to talk to parents and carers and support you in setting up your own support group.
