Advice and Information

Advice and Information

At Leeds Mencap we know that it’s difficult to know where to begin to find information or the help that you need.  Our staff will help you find what you need and can help with one off enquiries or developing your skills and knowledge or more complex issues on a one to one basis

Our information offer

Information and advice by phone, email and video call.  If having talked to you about the needs of your child or family we’re not the best people to help we’ll signpost you to someone else who can.

We let you know about training courses or webinars that might be of interest on our social media channels and by email

We have run courses or workshops to support you in understanding the specific needs of your child eg. Communication skills, sleep or behaviour and are looking at how we can offer this to more people remotely and face to face in the future

One to One Support

We can support you to address the more complex issues or challenges that you are facing. We work with families dealing with domestic violence, difficulties with parenting, problems engaging in education, financial hardship, housing, benefits and debt issues.

We offer the service by phone, email and video call but in some cases can do home visits or meet you in a place in your community that is more convenient to you if coming to the Vinery Centre is not easy to get to for you.

We can offer support when writing letters to the Local Authority or preparing for meetings and contributing to EHC plans, attendance and support at meetings, linking in with other professionals in Health, Education, Social Care, Nurseries and school and other voluntary agencies, help to access services, help with benefits and applications for equipment

We have a worker who specialises in supporting families when their child is aged 0 – 5, in particular those families whose child attends our specialist playroom or community nursery, and another worker who supports families when their child is aged 6 – 25.

You can refer yourself to the service or ask someone else who is supporting your child or family to refer you.

“It’s very informal, it’s ‘our time’ to relax, chat and discuss different issues.”

“We have guest speakers, who give information about a range of different subjects, for example respite, transport, puberty and behavioural issues.”

“The group is not a moaning group. We believe we need to be as positive as we can be about our children, but as carers we also need some tender loving care!”
