Families and Siblings

At Leeds Mencap, we are passionate about supporting the whole family.  Our fantastic range of services, clubs and activities for children and young people with learning disabilities helps support them to achieve their dreams and aspirations as individuals but it’s important that parents and carers and siblings are supported to achieve their ambitions as individuals and families too.

For parents and carers we can offer information and advice and signpost you to other services and organisations. We also offer ongoing support for more complex issues you may need help with.  We don’t make decisions for you but just support and guide you, working alongside your child’s school or health professionals or other agencies as needed.  We hope we help you to feel knowledgeable and confident as parents and be able to get the support your child and family needs.

Many parents and carers tell us that they often feel alone and isolated and as if no one understands.  As well as lending a listening ear ourselves we run parent support groups that bring people together to share knowledge and experience.  We can also help you set up your own group and then let you carry it on.

Brothers and sisters can sometimes find it hard to get time to themselves or attend clubs and activities.  We run a group just for them.  Take a look below to find out more.

“When I first joined siblings, I was unsure on what to expect.  When I first stepped foot in the old siblings building when I was Eight, I was afraid of what to expect. I am twelve now, thirteen in a few months and I can assure you that siblings is such a welcoming and warm place. There is no judgement of anybody, and we all get along fine.”
