History

Leeds Mencap has a long history of supporting individuals with learning disabilities throughout Leeds. Some key dates are below.

1953 Leeds Mencap was first started by a group of parents and carers
1964 Official opening of Mencap House on Chapeltown Road and beginning of the youth clubs
1965 Nursery started
1968 The Rookery residential home was opened
1968 Holiday home St Margaret’s in Bridlington was bought
1970 Play schemes began  
1983 A pilot Portage (home educational service for under 3s) began
1992 Challenge ​Anneka, the popular TV show, helped renovate our East End property and saw us move from Chapeltown Road
2010 Me2 (a dance group), the Friday Club (for 18-25 year olds) and a siblings group were founded.
