Carol and Rebecca
Rebecca attended Hawthorn Family Support Centre. Carol thought it would be nice for the staff at Leeds Mencap and other parents and carers to see how her daughter has progressed since leaving.
Rebecca was one of the first children in to the old style Hawthorn Nursery at East End Park. Rebecca started off in our Chapeltown Road premises and took part in the Challenge Anneka television programme which resulted in Leeds Mencap's move to East End Park.
Rebecca left school in June 2007 after completing her exams and gained the following qualifications.
City & Guilds – Food Studies - Entry level 2
OCR – English - Entry level 2 OCR – Science - Entry level 2 OCR – R.E. - Entry level 3 Edexel – Design & Technology - Entry level 3 ASDAN (life skills) - Bronze Award AQA – Maths - Entry level 3 AQA – GCSE Science - Pass grade g
Rebecca also attended College one day a week during her last two years at highschool and was very proud to receive an award for effort for the group she was in. It was presented by the Lord Mayor of Leeds at the Town Hall and she was supported by staff from Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School and Thomas Danby College.
Rebecca was chosen by the school to receive the prize for the Vocational Group she was in and was also awarded the Duncan Nicoll Cup for outstanding personal achievement. Rebecca is now attending Thomas Danby College doing a General Entry programme with life skills following on from a “Skills for Independent Living” course which she did last year. This course helped her to socialise better, adjust to college life and start to learn to be more responsible for organising things for herself, along with practical issues such as cooking, getting around, money, timekeeping etc.
Carol is sure Rebecca will continue to mature and participate in further courses at the college over the coming years, before entering the workplace.
Rebecca is now 18 and will be starting respite care this year, going for weekends to a shared house with support workers, where she will be able to experience being "independent" from the family for short breaks and learn to make choices for herself. |
