Firewalk - Irwin Mitchell

posted 11 Jan 2012 03:01 by Admin A   [ updated 11 Jan 2012 03:01 ]

Firewalk - Irwin Mitchell

Leeds Mencap would like to say a massive thank you to the dare-devil lawyers from Irwin Mitchell who hot-footed it over the burning coals at our Firewalk in December.

The brave, bare-footed team walked across the red-hot surface to raise over £2,900!

The team which took part in the fire walk comprised of the Leeds office regional managing partner Nick Bates, Jane Horton, Raminder Bhabra, Andy Russell, Sarah Coles, Scott Beckett, Tarlo Suprim, Rebecca Streets, Simon Cuerdon and Jack Gibson.

We would like to thank the wonderful team of firewalkers and their colleagues at Irwin Mitchell for raising such a fantastic amount of money.

We are so lucky to have such great friends in Irwin Mitchell who have been long standing supporters of Leeds Mencap.

Fundraising Officer

Christmas Wishes

Christmas Wishes certainly have come true this year at Leeds Mencap with the very generous donation of three bikes from Radio Aire's Christmas Wishes.

We were overjoyed when we were asked to visit the radio station recently and the children are very excited at the thought of soon being in possession of some brand news bikes!

Roll on the summer and we look forward to the wind rustling through our hair!

Firewalk 2011

posted 20 Dec 2011 04:19 by Admin A   [ updated 4 Jan 2012 07:07 ]

Firewalk Challenge a Great Success

Our spectacular firewalk took place last night at Headingley Carnegie Stadium where crowds gathered to watch the 52 courageous participants including Leeds Rhino rugby heroes; Rob Burrow’s and Ronnie the Rhino walk barefoot over 20’ of red hot colds for local charities Leeds Mencap & Leeds Rugby Foundation.
The participants after two hours of motivational training stepped out to endure red hot embers burning up to 1236 degree Fahrenheit.

With the support of the crowd all 52 firewalkers conquered this enormous challenge.

Sarah Coles one the firewalkers from the Irwin Mitchell team described the firewalk as “One of the most scariest yet exhilarating experiences of my life but made totally worthwhile knowing that it was for such an amazing cause!”

Sinead O’Brien Fundraising Officer at Leeds Mencap said “The firewalkers were unbelievable last night.  Leeds Mencap cannot thank them enough for their braveness and all their hard work fundraising before the event - they are all stars!”

Leeds Mums Firewalk Challenge

posted 19 Dec 2011 06:05 by Admin A   [ updated 19 Dec 2011 06:05 ]

Leeds Mums Firewalk Challenge

The following article appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post recently...

Like most parents, these three mums would walk over hot coals to keep their children happy and safe.  But this trio of brave ladies will literally complete the daring challenge when they take part in a Christmas Firewalk in Leeds later this month.

The firewalk will raise funds for Leeds Rugby Foundation and Mencap Leeds, which supports the families of Jodie Barrow, Hayley Davison and Kate Kelly, who all have children with learning disabilities.

Leeds Rhinos star Rob Burrow and mascot Ronnie The Rhino are also due to take part in the event, at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Monday, December 19.

Hayley, who lives in Hunslet, is mum to 18-month-old Lila and attends Leeds Mencap’s Hawthorn Family Support Centre in East End Park every Tuesday.

She said: “The Hawthorn Family Support Centre has been a welcome haven for me. I want to do as much as I can for Leeds Mencap because everyone at Leeds Mencap does as much as much as they can for my daughter and me, so that is why I am walking on hot coals even though I am petrified.”

Jodie, of Bramley – mum to 15-month-old Charlie – added: “Words can’t describe how great Leeds Mencap has been for my family. I am doing the firewalk as I want to give something back to this great charity – even though I am really nervous.”

Applications for the firewalk are still open but the last day for submitting entries is tomorrow.

The event is open to anyone who can raise at least £100 in sponsorship, with participants enduring red-hot embers burning at up to 1,236 degrees Fahrenheit.

Each firewalker will receive a two-hour motivational training session and the event will include free activities for all the family, including a bouncy castle and the chance to meet Rhinos players.

Sinead O’Brien, fundraising officer at Leeds Mencap, said: “The firewalk is going to be awe-inspiring and a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of Leeds Mencap and raise funds for two fantastic local charities.”

Gates at the firewalk open at 6.30pm, with the lighting of the fire at 7.30pm and the firewalk at 8pm.

Leeds Rhino Players and Carnegie Players get wrapping!

The Leeds Rhino and Carnegie players exchanged their scoring of tries for tying ribbons last weekend all in the aid of Leeds Mencap.

Set up outside the Leeds Rhino Store in the Merrion Centre the players volunteered to wrap Christmas presents for shoppers.  With their sellotape and wrapping paper at the ready the players used their hand eye co-ordination and team spirit to raise over £300 in 3 hours for Leeds Mencap.

Shoppers were extremely happy to get their presents wrapped by their favourite players and get a signed gift tag for their loved ones!

Sinead O’Brien fundraising officer for Leeds Mencap  said, “The Christmas wrapping was a huge success.  Leeds Mencap are so delighted to have worked in partnership with Leeds Rugby at so many events this year, we really can’t thank all the players and team enough for all your support- we hope we can work together again in the future”.

A big thank you also to our local Harehills’ ASDA and Co-operative Food and JTF for donating lots of treats and raffle prizes for the event!

We also had some fantastic volunteers who came down and were a massive help on the night, we really appreciate your help and time that you gave!

We hope everyone had a wonderful time and it was really great to see all the lovely families coming together.

Hardest Hit Day of Action

Hardest Hit Day of Action

Members of Leeds Mencap joined over 400 disabled people, their families and friends, on Saturday 22 October to protest against cuts to essential support for disabled people.

Crowds gathered together to hold a rally outside Leeds City Art Gallery and then marched on through the city centre. The rally was opened by Rt Hon Hilary Benn, MP.

Steve Winyard, chair of the Disability Benefits Consortium which organised this and 11 other rallies happening on the same day across the country said:

‘This Government promised to protect the most  vulnerable. Yet disabled people, those with long-term  conditions and our families are being hit hard by cuts to the benefits and services we need to live our lives. The total cuts facing disabled people and their families mean an estimated 9 billion pounds loss of income over the next four years. This is on top of cuts to many local care and support services. We will not sit by quietly while these cuts are made.’
